Drinking Tea

on Wellington Street

02 July - 26 July 2025

ACAE GALLERY

Wellington Street, Melbourne, Victoria

Drinking Tea on Wellington Street is the second iteration of the exhibition Drinking Tea on Flower Street held in the city of Xiamen, China in 2019. The exhibition offers viewers a recontextualized experience, with the title nodding to informal exchanges, quiet reflection, and intercultural connection.

The six Australian artists Kate Anderson, Tony Smibert, Vicki Grace, Tony Scott, Carmel Burns and Kir Larwill are joined by the Beijing artist Yang Yongli in the Australasian Cultural Arts Exchange gallery, ACAE in Collingwood, Melbourne to continue a theme of cross cultural dialogue.

Drinking Tea

YI ZHANG JIAN FANG

Flower Street, Xiamen, China

Eleven artists were invited to participate: Zhou Hongbin, Lin Yi, and Qi Yu from Xiamen; Hu Qinwu, Gao Ping, and Yang Yongli from Beijing; Kate Anderson, Vicki Grace, Tony Smibert, Carmen Burns, and Tony Scott from Australia. I felt there was a shared aesthetic enjoyed by all the artists – they were engaged by the title “Drinking Tea on Flower Street” and all travelled to Xiamen to be part of the

cross-cultural dialogue.
